Black background on empty TImage

When the component doesn't have any image assigned, clicking on it (or passing any other message) will turn it into black empty image. How to solve it? I'm creating an image editor, so I can't have an image assigned at compile time.

Personally I wouldn't use a TImage for a image editor (it's more for "static" images), but something like a paintbox.

ATM there are some issues with masks, which are worked on.

Any tutorial on how to use TPaintBox? It looks like my image doesn't get painted as with TImage.
