Trunk is at 5.99 ?
« on: October 03, 2026, 01:18:08 am »
I just noticed that the trunk is at 5.99, is that correct?

currently we have running, the possible release of 4.9

Strange that we should make such a big jump and of a boundary like that.

Trunk is at 5.99 because they're preparing the Lazarus 5.0 release which will use GTK3 as the default widgetset - in addition to all of the other goodies.

I don't get it. I mean, if they are preparing 5.0, now the version might be set to 4.99 (meaning, it's just about to become 5.0), but not 5.99, right?

I guess the theory is that for the Trunk, that will remain 5.99, while the releases have a range of 100 releases.

So 100 releases before we get another Trunk :o

Silly remark: even today has a new trunk with fresh commits. What do you mean?
A new release is being prepared and yes, that does not have all of the features in trunk because these are not tested sufficiently: not stable.
Would you rather have a proposal that we cut everybody out except for an inner circle that knows how to handle and knows what it means to use trunk? That is how commercial companies operate, but not done in the open source community.

The trunk version 5.99 will be relevant for all releases 5.0; 5.2; 5.4... and will become 6.99 at the time of preparing 6.0
This is excellent. But we need fpc 4.0))

No, the repository branches have diverged, and the trunk v4.99 has become the base for the future v5.0 release. The trunk branch main will now continue development for the future v6.0. Only commits containing fixes will be copied into the fixes_5 branch (the foundation for the v5.0 release candidates and the final version).

Thus, each new release v5.0RC1, v5.0RC2, and beyond will be stabilized before the final v5.0 is created. There will be no new features, only bug fixes (and, possibly, only the most essential improvements).

In the future, this same branch will remain in use for minor versions (v5.2, v5.4, etc), as it will continue to receive only fixes.

I hope more experienced developers will correct me if there are any inaccuracies ))

I can confirm this with one of my installations. It looks like the splash screen is showing by outdated "startlazarus[.exe]". Just run "make starter" in the Lazarus folder.

This has always been the case.
It's starlazarus that sets the version info in the splash AFAIK.

FPC functions the same. When a new fixes branch is created (5.x in this case), the trunk version is update so that development version remains higher than release versions. It is a clarity thing.
