SpellChecker Example: spell check for TRichMemo in Lazarus
« on: October 06, 2026, 09:20:07 pm »
Hello,

I've written a spell checking component called TSpellChecker for Lazarus (Free Pascal). It plugs into a TRichMemo and underlines misspelled words with red wavy lines, offering suggestions in a context menu so an error can be replaced with one click.

The repository includes a small demo application that shows the simplest possible usage: drop the component on a form, set a couple of properties.

The project ships with build scripts that install the required packages into Lazarus and compile the demo in one step - build on Windows, make on Linux.

GitHub: https://github.com/plaintool/spellcheck

The component and packages are free and released under the MIT license.

Two engines are supported:
  • Native Windows spell checker - no dictionaries needed, language list comes from the system.
  • Hunspell - a pure Pascal implementation, works on both Windows and Linux. The component can download the required .aff / .dic files on the fly from a URL, cache them in a local folder, or load them from streams.
Feedback and suggestions are always welcome, especially on GitHub Issues. Hope you find it useful!
