Installing Lazarus via MacPorts
« on: June 18, 2026, 03:52:56 pm »
Good news for Installing Lazarus 4.8 on a macOS 14 Sonoma Intel Mac x86_64 environment.

There is a current port for Lazarus 4.8 available from the MacPorts project.  This may help not only on other older Mac OS X / macOS environments too, I guess.

This is intended for a system-wide install and thus should be managed from an Administrator account. To install lazarus, paste this into the macOS Terminal after installing MacPorts:
Code: Bash  [Select][+][-]
  1. sudo port install lazarus
Done.

Lazarus should be ready to run and can be enjoyed from any account afterwards. One will find the Lazarus app via /Applications/MacPorts/lazarus.app as GUI appropriate for Mac OS X / macOS.

Currently, this installs at least the following:
  • fpc @3.2.2_4
  • fpc-sources @3.2.2_0
  • lazarus @4.8-0_0+cocoa
Including several FPC and Lazarus documentation accessible via lhelp and the Lazarus IDE.

Further information one might find helpful:

Hope this helps as it did help me.

Following these instructions does, indeed, give a working UI. However, if you try to rebuild the IDE of add any packages, it fails. The problem seems to be the location or something with fpg.cfg. Not many other options, it seems. HomeBrew no longer works for my Mini and fpcupdeluxe fails to compile buildunit_rtl_objpas.pp. So I hope we can get MacPorts working.

check how many fpc.cfg's you have. The governing one should be in /etc , not a local one.

Thank you. But which etc directory? There are many (I've never seen such a convoluted directory structure - but then I normally use Windows) Two related to the install are MacOs SSD/opt/local/libexec/fpc/etc and MacOs SSD/opt/local/etc. Both of those have recent fpc.cfg files. You said "not local" so maybe not one of these?
