Lazarus 4.6 on Ubuntu 26.04 too slow
« on: April 26, 2026, 12:16:14 pm »
I installed Lazarus 4.6 on a fresh Ubuntu 26.04 and everything went very, very slow.
Should I wait for upgrades?

For heavens sake, its a six and a half gig download !

mgc, I cannot replicate your problem. I guess you are using the Gnome Desktop ?  Thats what I just tested. You can install my app, tomboy-ng, its in the official Ubuntu repo, just "sudo apt install tomboy-ng". tomboy-ng is built from FPC/Lazarus. See how that feels.

Just to be sure, I pulled another, recently built binary from my Debian Bookworm, it works fine too.

Honestly, Ubuntu is slow, the Gnome DE is dreadfully slow, that might be all you are seeing. If you must use Ubuntu, I'd suggest choosing Mate or XFCE, even Cinnamon.

Next step might be to specify exactly what you mean by 'slow' ?  eg "it takes 8 seconds to load", "it takes 14 seconds to compile Lazarus" - something we can compare to ?

Tomorrow, I might have time to install FPC/Lazarus on the VM, so, if you have some numbers ...

Not on my PC. It's neither slower nor faster than on 25.10 which I upgraded from  8)

What is slow? Like way under a minute, merely seconds? (Ok, Ok, I have fiber and the server is no turtle/snail either)
Looks like your provider has an issue.

If your mobile phone supports 5G, use it as a hotspot. That is: if your wifi card supports high speed transfers on the 5Ghz band (I think)  and you have unlimited data.
5G is usually not below 200 Mbs per second, I get over 300, way over.. So it is well worth it if you have unlimited data. It is not slower, or very little, than my fiber connection in my cases. On Android phones the hotspot can be configured through the hotspot icon in the system menu.

This might be a "work-around" for people with a slow internet connection, but unlimited data on their phone and a proper wifi card.
(Although a quick test on another phone just gave me ~70d and ~50u, which is still good)

objects are fine constructs. You can even initialize them with constructors.

went very, very slow.

Which part?
- Starting the IDE (until you can start working)
- Loading a project
- Typing in the editor (or scrolling, or ...)
- Editing the form
- Compiling
- Your compiled app when being run
....

Isn't that the wayland only version? Maybe missing video drivers or so ?

I think I found out what is going on. It seems that there is an incompability between Lazarus and Wayland because If you chance de scalling of the screen, everything goes sllowly, taking 5 seconds to press any button. If I turn to 100% scale, that is ok.

Now the problem is with BGRAbitmap, which can't be installed using PMO, I don't know why.

Maybe I mis-read, but this is not about the code, but the download speed?
Otherwise it makes no sense. There is no speed difference in compiled programs.

No Thaddy, I don't think he is taking about download speeds, its run time. That seems to relate to scalling, thats a bug he should report. With, I suggest a few more words than he/she used here. Please !

Now the problem is PMO, is that OPM by any chance ??

Might be translated text ?
