Change original package or make a copy and install after changes?

Hello,

I'm planning on using a modified version of SplashAbbout, respecting the proper credits and sending a copy to the author. Not many changes, just redisposing some elements and adding i18n.

What would be the correct way to do this?
  • install the original package and change it;
  • or make a copy of the package in my project folder, change it there and install afterwards.

I'm more inclined to the second, but... :-\
