Bug#967564: raise severity of gtk2 bugs
« on: January 08, 2026, 03:54:57 am »
Forwarded from the Debian mailing list, its time Lazarus (and other apps) no longer encourage use of GTK2.
Time for some leadership folks. Whats it going to be, Qt5/6 or GTK3 ?

(the bug number is a debian number of course, not a FPC/Lazarus one)

Control: severity -1 serious

As announced [1], we are trying to remove gtk2 from forky. Therefore,
I am raising the severity of this issue.

On behalf of the Debian GNOME team,

GTK3 is a no-go. If you cannot build a usable IDE with it, it's not ready.

Yes, while it has made heaps of progress recently, still a bit off. And even if we concentrated on getting a perfect IDE, how credible would it be unless tested widely against "out in the wild" apps ?

In Debian, my app, tomboy-ng, is built using Qt5. And it works very well indeed. But a Debian release comes with an appropriate libqt5pas, people who just send out compiled binaries to whoever will need to package ! And some end users will need to upgrade their linux. Ubuntu is not doing anyone any favors with their "extended support programs".

Sigh ....

Sigh indeed!

I wasn't even aware about the situation until recently. Happily making mini games for AMD64 Debian in standard GTK2.

Now this  :o

Now trying the GTK3.

The good news is that the GTK3 programs seems to run out of the box on the latest Debian 13 (Trixie). The bad news is that not all functionality of my old code survives when re-complied with the GTK3.

So far I've managed to convert one program to GTK3. Is playable at least. Will make next new program on GTK3.
