Where are you from?
« on: December 16, 2025, 02:47:24 pm »
I noticed many forum users are from Russia and Poland, some from Germany. Are these the last bastions of Pascal?

Please tell me what country you are from :)

The distribution on this forum is likely not representative, probably even going to be misleading.

Some countries (or language based groups) have there own forums, and may be less represented here.
E.g. there is a separate Chinese forum. And afaik Brazil has a rather large community, but it isn't on your poll list.

You can also get some ideas from the download stats on sourceforge. Though they are not representative either. There are alternative mirrors, and other install options (e.g. git, or Linux repo). And depending on region people may have different opinions on Sourceforge itself, which then reflect in the statistics as they may be more or less likely to download there.

But do the closed communities really matter? Here he share ideas, we share code. I don't remember ever downloading a library made by a Brazilian from somewhere else.

As far as I remember, the following countries are still missing: Netherlands, Finland, Denmark, USA, Austria, China, and probably at least a few more.
Best regards / Pozdrawiam

I wouldn't call them "closed communities". I don't know much about the Brazilian one, but e.g. the German one is definitely open. Yet, many of those prefer to converse in their native tongue.

And, when being observant to posts made here, one can see that English is a barrier for many. Yes it is widely spoken, and especially in IT. But a hobbyist may not be professionally engaged in IT, or any business requiring them to actively use English. And many questions or debates here aren't a simple request for directions to the next train station. Seeking profound understanding of some matter is often more demanding on the language skills.

Btw, if I am not very mistaken at least one (I don't know everyone country / so could be more) person in the team is from Brazil. I would guess you downloaded that?

Given that there are close to 200 countries... There are many more missing.

I am from The Netherlands.
The list is not representative and of no value as it is now, too many countries are missing.

If they converse in their native language and make libraries available only on their forum then they are a closed community, and we ("the world") don't really have any "gains" from them. From "the world's" perspective it doesn't even matter if they code in Pascal or something else.
People here, who are from Brazil, are open to the world. They commit their ideas and code for everyone.
You either post your code/ideas here or on github or other Pascalers won't find it, won't use it and it won't matter if you did something in Pascal or not.

It would be nice if the list of countries was sorted.  It would make it easier to find the country of origin.
FPC v3.2.2 and Lazarus v4.0rc3 on Windows 7 SP1 64bit.
