Lazarus 4 under Win 7 - "installation"
« on: June 19, 2025, 12:09:19 pm »
This is not installation any more, but opening your existing project for the first time.

The project comes from Lazarus 3 and it uses components not installed yet.
So far, so trivia.

There are 2 matters of beauty:

1) The OPM offers components (in my case install sounds) and instant compiling. After this Lazarus opens with the OPM open and this resulted in freezing the IDE in my case. Restart helped. Just a matter of beauty, because the workaround is self-explaning.

idea: close the OPM window in this re-compile prozess before re-starting the IDE

2) Another offer for installing missing components leads into a circle. See screeshot.
As well a matter of beauty. After having clicked away enough of error-messages (fewer would be nicer), you install them.

idea: halt the started debugging process, if the user clicks this button before going on

I think it is not the task of OPM maintainer(s) to prevent users with legacy systems like win7 from making mistakes.
Due to censorship, I changed this to "Nelly the Elephant". Keeps the message clear.

Best to report this as bugs.

That makes sure the relevant maintainer will get to see this.

The purpose of the IDE is to find out, which mistakes the programmer made?

And about Win 7 - I use it not by free will, but because it works.
Not sure, if you followed the thread about the troubles I had with Lazarus on Linux Cinnamon Xia, a most recent OS.

The purpose of the IDE is to find out, which mistakes the programmer made?

If the IDE hangs, then it is a bug in the IDE. No mistake that the user makes should hang the IDE.

If the IDE prompts for non-fulfilable conditions, then that too is a problem in the IDE.
