Wiki access blocked
« on: May 20, 2025, 03:39:46 am »
I was looking at IDE help topics which link to wiki pages. I got a cute little interstial for the Anubis  Bot Blocker and cannot access anything on the wiki since. It seems it's too aggressive.

I’m afraid this is deliberately disregarded collateral damage, a few legitimate users being locked out as a sacrifice to keep the infrastructure running for the majority. Look on the bright side: Now there is a good reason to improve the IDE help topics by not relying on any Wiki pages.
Yours Sincerely
Kai Burghardt

Can you send us the root IP? just the root. You can replace the higher two blocks with xxx.xxx
Due to censorship, I changed this to "Nelly the Elephant". Keeps the message clear.

Sure. It's 75.109.xxx.xxx.

Not my call. And even if it were, I would not consider that approach to be a reasonable response.
By extension, I should stop using these forums too.
Add SourceForge to the list.
Well hell... why don't I just cancel my internet service while I'm at it?

Part of the lower blocks point to Anubis indeed (the xxx;s), but Marc can excempt you if you ask him. (that whould be the third block)
The main 075 is usually the U.S.A but I also have some IP's starting with 075 in the Netherlands. These are shared servers, only my full servers are either NL or DE.

Considering that it's either an approach like Anubis or no Wiki at all, because the server simply collapses due to all the IP address it needs to block, the choice is clear. The need of the many, outweighs the need of the few. Not to mention it's easier to unblock people.
Of course it would be better if we wouldn't need that in the first place, but scraping has absolutely escalated in the past months and it takes any open source infrastructure down that doesn't protect itself.

I’m no web programming expert but I wonder if  there Is any way to test if the person trying to access the wiki is logged into the forums and maybe give them a hint on how to get unblocked as a forum message or something.

Hi Joanna
Do you realize how many hits per second this server gets, when things are heated?!?
Your solution (could be possible), would simply strangle/kill the server.
Regards Benny
If it ain't broke, don't fix it ;)
PCLinuxOS(rolling release) 64bit -> KDE5 -> FPC 3.2.2 -> Lazarus 3.6 up until Jan 2024 from then on it's both above &: KDE5/QT5 -> FPC 3.3.1 -> Lazarus 4.99

Okay. I can buy that. But I would suggest a more stream-lined way to report that an individual is blocked then. It took me several hours to track down the responsible party and to get my IP white-listed.

The other suggestion to just not use it for a given purpose is flat out wrong.

yea I figured .
I was thinking of something similar to maybe whitelisting the addresses of people who login to forums regularly preemptively for the wiki.

No, the forums and the Wiki are separate and also there are very likely many people that don't frequent the forums that (need to) access the wiki.

Considering that it's either an approach like Anubis or no Wiki at all, because the server simply collapses due to all the IP address it needs to block, the choice is clear. The need of the many, outweighs the need of the few. Not to mention it's easier to unblock people.

The point is not to waste server resources for blocked IP adresses, so this is blocked at the TCP level, not the HTTP level where one could display a message. So, no.
