Если человек знает OpenGL ES, то проще использовать уже готовые наработки, которые не требуют лишних действий (например SDL, но там тоже нужны лишние действия, но меньше). В ZenGL есть готовые примеры по использованию OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0 под 4 архитектуры и с возможностью сборки посредством Android Studio.
