Install in separate folder or update in place?

I'm about to install Lazarus and FPC on MacOS (M4 machine). I would like to test the 4.0 RC versions.

My question is: Are the RC releases intended to become the final 4.0 release through updates in-place? If so, I will install them as if I was installing the final 4.0 release and update them as new RC versions are available. If not, I would like to install each RC version in its own folder so I can run each one independently and simultaneously to compare the changes that each contains.

There is no information on the intention of how the RC's shoudl be treated in the instructions (that I can find).
