PM recipient
« on: February 22, 2025, 09:24:10 pm »
Hi,

The following is something that has been bothering me since the existence of this forum and since nobody seem to have mentioned it before I am starting to doubt my sanity.

Whenever I'm editing a PM and preview the message, the recipient (or recipients) that I carefully selected are wiped clean from the message editor.

It is annoying as f*ck because there seem to be no cure. Even after manually adding the recipient(s) again (no matter how many times) they are wiped out again on the next press on the preview link.

Thank you for the attention.
Today is tomorrow's yesterday.

I thought you were about to "do a Joanna" and say that you couldn't see some peoples' postings (or vice versa :-)

What I see is that the To: field is blank, but the recipient is underneath with a checkbox allowing his removal. Same applies to Bcc:. So basically, they're editable controls which allow users to be added one at a time, as distinct from many email etc. clients which allow you to (or insist that you) fabricate a comma-separated list with arbitrary quoting rules.

I agree that it's odd, and it has certainly confused me in the past, but it works (for almost everybody, the exception demanding that people use IRC instead).

No-no, not a "do a Joanna"  :)

I am perfectly OK with accepting that some people do not wish to accept any of my ramblings (I get tired of my own as well at times  :)  )

Now, for this issue to reproduce create a PM and place some code tags with some content. Then press preview. It is either that or pressing preview twice in a row.

Edit: It seems to be due to the code-tags.

I have to say that I've got absolutely nothing against Joanna: I'm old enough that the concept of a little old lady with silver hair tied into a bun isn't totally alien.

Ah, that's interesting: I tend not to use BBC- or MD-style tags except when I /really/ need to make myself clear due to many (, many) years of experience with Usenet-style conventions (i.e. Usenet, plaintext email, CIX etc.).

When I tried the preview button it had no apparent effect, so it would appear that (a) preview does nothing unless there is BBC markup and (b) when preview does something it screws the recipient.

Moral: be careful to whom you send markup :-)

Not sure to whom this should be reported...

My guess would be https://github.com/SimpleMachines/SMF. I doubt it's been customized for use here.

True, but OTOH FPC/Lazarus might have a user who is known to the SMF developers, and if it doesn't go via him then an upstream fix might not find its way onto the server we're using.

I do recall discussion a few months ago about something... possibly the [+] button for a code inclusion. But I can't remember which of the core team were involved.

Updated: and I'd note that that's one of the fairly rare situations where I've absolutely /had/ to use SMF's BBC markup to get my point across. I'd also note that even if I could remember which of the core team were involved in updating the server, it would not be appropriate for me to mention it in public lest I appear to be "volunteering" him.

At the least thank you for the ACK. Helps me to not go completely bonkers  :)

I'll try and see if I am able to find anything related upstream.

Depending on the result(s) probably worth a ping to, I guess, Marc.

Thanks.

Whenever I'm editing a PM and preview the message, the recipient (or recipients) that I carefully selected are wiped clean from the message editor.

I noticed this a long time ago too, but didn't know how to reproduce it. Because of this, I had to copy the text many times, and click on the username again on some page...

My guess would be https://github.com/SimpleMachines/SMF. I doubt it's been customized for use here.

I searched for this problem on the bug tracker using the words "PM"/"Personal message"/"Preview", but didn't find anything (even among closed issues). I hope someone will report this.

In the forum case, we are just users of SMF (with some small changes by me).
And we don't have any contact to address issue to other than their issue tracker.

In which case, in case the mentioned version number on this forum-site is correct, we are out of luck as that version is not actively supported anymore (will only receive security updates in case there is reason enough to do so).

Perhaps something to take note of and check against this issue if there would be an upgrade.

It is what it is  :)

I was able to locate a similar issue some 5-6 years ago  (or even older, I can't remember exactly) which was marked as fixed (apparently it did not get fixed completely or was affected by something else which was fixed) but unfortunately nothing else in that regards.
Today is tomorrow's yesterday.

A forum update is still on my todo list. It was planned after the server upgrade, but other issues popped up.
