I found a number of the error messages rather unhelpful, mainly because it tended to direct you not to the broken bit but to something that used the broken bit, and was a bit vague about the issue.

Having said that I just completed an excercise to convert from Delphi-7 to both Delphi-11 and Lazarus, for some complex but non visual code.
FPC didn't quite get 100% compatible for indirect procedures and the way Delph-7 made up-arrow optional, and some funny agenda about constructors.
But Delphi-11 is no longer at all compatible with older code, so a total nighmare and nasty fudges required.
So after a load of work with Delphi-11 I got the code compiled but it crashed and burned. With Lazarus and moderate work it ended up working just fine.
And on top of that I much preferred the Lazarus IDE! (I last tried it when version 1 came out).
