UK's Online Safety Act
« on: January 18, 2025, 10:11:14 am »
I've just learned about this: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2023/50/contents on Haiku OS forum.
As of March 16, every website that offers user-to-user interaction to UK citizens (Lazarus forum goes into this category) will need to comply with this act, or get sued in UK with some pretty big fines.

Topic on Haiku forum:

  • Kallstadt seems a good place to evict Trump to.

So sue me  :D.
Frankly, I don't see anything that overly disturbes me.
Although the wording is a bit unfortunate and it does not comply to some parts of International Treaties that the U.K. signed up to, and sir Keith is very unlikely to withdraw from those.
Blame it on one of the last brexiteer civil servants that destroyed your country.

But I am sure they don't want the Trumps back...

I am totally apolitical person. I do not ever know who is the current president in the country I live (Austria), so... brexit or whatever is out of my scope of interests.
My concern is, that apparently web-forums like this one, would need to pay lawyers and compile the documentation/rapports needed to not get a lawsuit in UK against them.
If you took a look at the HaikuOS forum, you've probably seen that they are considering geo-blocking the UK users from the forum as the simplest method of compilance with the act.

No, it does not say that lawyers need be employed, just that 'someone' needs to do an occasional risk assessment and, if necessary act. As the things they are concerned about would have no place here, that's pretty easy.
The forum is already moderated, there is a process (that works) for users to report to the moderators if something inappropriate appears (usually only ads in our case, but would apply to other inappropriate content). And evidence is moderators take quick and effective action.
I'd say we comply already. Stand down.

I took a quick glimpse at the act and I saw something about identifying users of online things? What do they mean by that? It could be interpreted as submitting government documents  :o
I’m not interested in being doxxed and I doubt that most other people who interact online are either.

It's already arranged, we will be working under direct supervision of Mr Creedy and his Fingermen. ;)

Oh, Joahan, you miss so much because of your fear of search engines.

Peter Creedy is head of the secret police, "the Fingermen". He and his secret police are charged with apprehending "V," the masked vigilante whose high-profile acts of terrorism have undermined Norsefire's control of England.

I sort of suspect Martin is not really involving Peter Creedy ....

I’m not sure who “Joahan” is but thanks for the link. I’m a bit lacking in pop culture.. :-X

I don’t even understand why people need to converse anymore now that we have search engines to give us page after page of redundant websites with advertisements to help us remember our previous searches and decide what we need to buy or give attention to.
I guess this forum is obselete now that we have robots to be friends with. :D

Yep, I understand your position. But with some precautions its not too bad. I search using Firefox and DDG, I have ad blockers and anti-tracking tools installed. Its not perfect but i can live with it.

On certain topics it’s literally impossible to get unbiased results. It’s like search engines have already decided what I am going to be shown before I do the search.

I once tried to filter all .com websites out of the search results but nope it wouldn’t let me. One time to test how bad search engines are, I did a hypothetical search for... “______ killed my son“  and all the search results were promoting ________ !
I had to go to yandex to find search results that weren’t promoting ________

I have a really really low opinion of search engines. If possible I want a back and forth conversation with REAL people. Even in that case nothing is guaranteed to be a representation of the truth, but at least it can be more fun.
Thanks for conversing   ;)

Are you under 16 Thaddy ?  Its about to be banned for younger people here in Oz. Normally, I reject the nanny state model but agree these profit driven, conscious free services are evil.

Services like this forum are not affected, but I wonder how many < 16 yo we have here :-)
