What I Really don’t understand is why Christians allowed Christmas to be truncated from 12 days of celebration down to 2 days {which are mostly about Wasteful consumerism in my experience}

I wish I could have experienced Christmas back in its heyday with a lot of singing and celebration that didn’t involve buying stuff made in sweatshops.

strange holiday, where believers should have been praying but they don't, bearded clown with shady past, antlered meat animals and chopped coniferous trees. I don't understand why and what we celebrate.

New Year eve at least have some real meaning, counter flips one digit (not just a number but integer, eh) and we get drunk and have a party.

Do a google search for
Code: Text  [Select][+][-]
  1. why do we celebrate christmas
you might find it interesting.
(FPC v3.0.4 and Lazarus 1.8.2) or (FPC v3.2.2 and Lazarus v3.2) on Windows 7 SP1 64bit.

Whatever do you mean? Live in the UK and you'd see the Xmas decorations going up at Diwali and staying up until Ramadan... whenever it happened to be.

Although a bit belated: Merry Christmas.

Traditionally I add my greetings as an excercise in "obfuscated pascal"  O:-)

Code: Pascal  [Select][+][-]
  1. program x_x;
  2. ...
  3. end.

Have fun.

Very nice Christmas tree “from Ikea”, that is, to “assemble” yourself :D As suggested, I “assembled it” for myself in Lazarus and I attach what I came out with :)

...(in Melbourne Australia it never snows, but we do have heat waves instead of cold snow)

Out of curiosity, I checked the temperature in northern Australia. I thought that at this time of year, Darwin and Cairns are even warmer than Sydney. But Google "says" that the temperature is similar.

Where I live, there was a little snow a few days ago. But now it has completely melted. And there is fog. Despite the fact that it is winter. And there should be 20 degrees of frost and at least a meter of snow :) That's because the authorities of the Union of European Socialist Republics (UESR) are too slow to eliminate excess CO2 :D

Thanks for Merry Christmas. I live in russian federation which has 100 years of atheism (after anti-Czar 'revolution'). So ppl here respect New Year but pay small attention to Christmas, sad!

Nothing lasts forever. Tyrants and despots are mortal, just like other people. So, someday, something will change for the better in Russia. Let's hope that soon.

Also sad is that Christmas is originally a pagan tradition which was conveniently usurped by religion.... and these are the people who preach honesty and are usually prone to deliver a guilt trip to others.... hmmm... great example  :D

It's not all bad. Many old pre-Christian holidays have been (ostensibly) adopted by Christianity. And in fact, many of them have only a minimal "Christian gilding" or additional elements. It's better that they exist than that they don't exist at all.

Hopefully Ukraine won't be bombed today.  It would be nice for them to have  a nice day too (for a change.)

Let's hope.

In that case I'd point out that even though there might be historical discrepancies between our calendars, Russia and the USSR have long accepted the principle of using timezones relative to UTC.

The discrepancies concern only the liturgical calendars, since the Orthodox Church sticks to the old method of measuring time.

...After 1991 we have Eltsin's time and Pu's time. These times are somewhat filled with Christianity, but still russian federation has church separated from the state (like in USSR). Pu is walking to the Christ church and to the sinagoga (he fires sinagoga's candles there) at the same time, so it is not full rise of the Christianity.

The separation of religion and the State is a good solution, both for religion, the state and ordinary people. Otherwise, various pathologies appear, as can be seen in many countries. In the case of Russia, it is known that the people at the top of the Orthodox Church are quite strongly connected to the government (Pu). This is neither good for the Orthodox Church nor for society.

Just take a good time with your peoples.

Rightly so. This is also necessary for the psyche, such a break from the "grayness of everyday life". And the end of the year is a good time for this.

Well, because it's probably a "tradition" of large American agglomerations that has spread. Unfortunately.

Everything points to the fact that these holidays are the result of the overlap of different customs from many centuries. And we see the (current) final result. I have nothing against holidays, if they are cheerful and peaceful (maybe I am a little irritated by this consumer chaos). As a child, I always liked that there was a Christmas tree. Today I am not so enthusiastic, but I still like it.

Many of the Christmas customs came from pre Christian pagan harvest celebrations where trees were decorated outdoors. When it comes down to it the narrative of the guy who lives at the North Pole and has a sleigh with flying reindeer delivering presents one day a year iis much more pleasant than the stories modern people come up with.  ;D

Out of curiosity, I checked the temperature in northern Australia. I thought that at this time of year, Darwin and Cairns are even warmer than Sydney. But Google "says" that the temperature is similar.

Darwin usually gets to ~33C during the day; there is some variation though: during the Wet season (now) the relative humidity is ~99%; while during the Dry (~July) the RH is much lower. Overnight, Darwin is usually in the low 20sC - if it goes below 20C everyone breaks out their winter gear. :)
Cairns is similar but a little bit cooler (and gets a bit more rain).

Down South (= Melbourne and Sydney) there are many "seasons", yesterday Melbourne had a (mini)heatwave with temps around 39C.
The only Aus (state) capital the "sees" snow is Hobart (there is a mountain just west of the city that sometimes get snow).

Despite the above, I have heard that there is more snow in the Aus Alps than the Swiss Alps, sadly I don't know whether this is true (I read it on Facebook).

cheers

Typical Melbourne weather at the moment. Heat, Fires, Wind, Rain. Like some sort of washing machine cycle.
A number of years ago at this "Summer time" of the year we had a massive hail storm that smashed up a lot of car windscreens.

speter, I might need to go down to Tasmania and up to the mountains to escape the heat. Merry Xmas.

At present, I am at a place called "Safety Beach", which is about midway between Brisbane and Sydney. The weather is typically lovely here; at present (4pm) the temp is 27C and the wind is blowing very strongly; the ocean is a beautiful dark blue with lots of white-caps. This place is "famous" (in a local sense) for the kangaroos (who wander through suburbia, eating the grass, and pooing everywhere); but contrary to some stories, generally keep themselves out of people's backyards!  :o

cheers

I suppose that this was about Austrian Alps.  ;)

I don't think so, I heard that somewhere too. But it is a myth: https://apac.dtn.com/news/does-australia-really-have-more-snow-than-switzerland/

Which reminded me of this page: https://www.x360ce.com/. Click "Austrian version" :)
