can fpc and lazarus run independently side by side
(1/1)
jsgsix:
Can fpc be installed separately from lazarus? or do all installed versions of fpc need to be uninstalled and only lazarus installed by itself? I am new to this and have had considerable trouble getting lazarus installed without errors being declared when I attempt to load lazarus. I am running Linux Lite 7.2 on a Dell Latiitude 5580 laptop, Intel Core i5 7200 U cpu. I have successfully installed free pascal 3.2.2 but I cannot manage to get lazarus installed sucessfully. (The version that comes with Linux Lite is hopelessly out of date.)

Yes, no problem.

If you have a installed and working free pascal compiler then it is a 3 liner in the shell in order to compile Lazarus (from within the directory where the Lazarus sources are located).
See also wiki in particular this paragraph (but I encourage thy to read the whole article)
In case of questions/issues, just ask :)

Hey jsgsix,
Apart from the very useful advice from Tron, you may as well have a try at fpcupdeluxe.
With it you'll be able to control exactly what you want in terms of version combinations and all isolated in it's own folder.
This means you can have several parallel installs of both fpc and Lazarus for all your testing needs.
Hope that helps!!
Cheers,
Gus

In case going the FPCUpDeluxe route (which is perfectly fine) and not that familiar with either *nix and/or FPC//Lazarus then don't use any FPC/Lazarus installation from your distributions package manager (make sure to remove them before using FPCUpDeluxe and also make sure that all configuration files of both Lazarus and FPC are removed from the default system locations).
Not following that advise (which is also fine) will eventually end up in tears (unless you know what you are doing). I for sure do not have any intention anymore in having to pick up the shattered dreams afterwards :)
