It's also the number of users/bots in the last 15 minutes. Not at this moment.
So divide it by 900 (60*15) and you've got the probable number of users/bot at this second

Yeah, it's a useless statistic.
It should only count actually logged in users, not guests. In that case it would represent something useful.

(There are mods for that, not sure for this older forum software though)

The number of guests is to know when we’re being ddosed.
It’s kind of comforting to at least know why the forum is impossible to use.

I'm sure with a DDOS, there are more than 4376 hits PER 15 MINUTES on the forum.

4376 is 4 hits per second. That's not really a DDOS and any (decent) server would be able to handle that.

No. There is no pressing need.

Is the non self hosted gitlab currently being used free? Even if no money is required there is the cost of all the code and bug fixes that will never happen because people aren’t able to access gitlab.

Of course (for example, I did). And there are definitely more such people.

Is there a way to determine if a guest is human or bot besides browsing speed or viewing habits?
 I’m assuming that a bot will methodically navigate the forums in some logical order section by section, thread by thread. Maybe stopping after recent posts if it has already collected earlier dates.

This is all speculation of course, I’ve never written a website scraper bot...

Crawlers are necessary to make search engines work.  Anyway, how to do forum system administration is not on topic here.

It's a pity that this interesting topic and discussion derailed into off-topic discussions. - And although the thread is more than 120 days old (as I got warned about when starting this reply), there is no need for a new topic I guess.

Anyway, the original topic is still important. To my mind Codeberg is far superior to commercial solutions for an open-source community like ours. The Free Pascal/Lazarus community is unique in that it consists of a high percentage of open-source friendly participants. This fact reflects a certain mindset which is highly compatible with Codeberg's philosophy, not so much with commercial providers like GitLab or even MS GitHub. Although a migration always is accompanied by friction, it may be the most authentic choice.
