Sure Some of the guests are people not logged in, most are probably bots collecting data.

Everything related to making things more secure is a big nuisance. I would rather not have to lock anything or login. I’d prefer to have a forum where I could just come and participate without an account..

It's also the number of users/bots in the last 15 minutes. Not at this moment.
So divide it by 900 (60*15) and you've got the probable number of users/bot at this second  :D

Yeah, it's a useless statistic.
It should only count actually logged in users, not guests. In that case it would represent something useful.

(There are mods for that, not sure for this older forum software though)

The number of guests is to know when we’re being ddosed.
It’s kind of comforting to at least know why the forum is impossible to use.  :D
That's not an indication of that.

I'm sure with a DDOS, there are more than 4376 hits PER 15 MINUTES on the forum.

4376 is 4 hits per second. That's not really a DDOS and any (decent) server would be able to handle that.

She certainly acts like she's in control.

Can you please Exercise the “host an instance of GitLab yourself” option.

No. There is no pressing need.

Is the non self hosted gitlab currently being used free? Even if no money is required there is the cost of all the code and bug fixes that will never happen because people aren’t able to access gitlab.

Considering that we don't manage to keep up with the bugs we do get... 😅

Also, some of the first time posters seem like they have reading the forum for a while, and it is quite possible they did not create an account until they needed to ask a question.

Of course (for example, I did). And there are definitely more such people.

Sure Some of the guests are people not logged in, most are probably bots collecting data.

And they are definitely not bots. For example, I can send a certificate of my "non-botness" :)

Is there a way to determine if a guest is human or bot besides browsing speed or viewing habits?
I’m assuming that a bot will methodically navigate the forums in some logical order section by section, thread by thread. Maybe stopping after recent posts if it has already collected earlier dates.

This is all speculation of course, I’ve never written a website scraper bot...

Crawlers are necessary to make search engines work.  Anyway, how to do forum system administration is not on topic here.
