Does Lazarus create files with a '.work' extension?

I just merged a project branch I was working on back to master and noticed that some of the pascal files I was working had acquired a .work extension, ie filename.pas.work and filename.lfm.work in addition to filename.pas and filename.lfm.

Are those the result of the merging process or do they have something to do with Lazarus?
