The little popups in the snapshot I posted don't stay open.  The moment the bookmark is set or recovered they go away (as they should, otherwise they would obscure text which is undesirable.)

Well then try ctrl-shift B   (keymapping: "toggle bookmark ...")

The menu pops up. You see which ones are free, you press 0..9 to select one of them.
Only missing bit "Set a free bookmark" has no key inside the menu. That ought a be changed.

And going to a bookmark Ctrl-B
You even see file + line before you choose the number.

Good suggestion, thank you Martin.

If find it's not quite as easy to visualize as M.E's popup but, it is definitely a substantial improvement over having to navigate to the menu to see what bookmarks are set.

Thanks again.

Well its a question of how it can be visualized in a popup menu.

Maybe Icons could be greyed (not sure if for those already set, or those not yet set).
That would need to be done before the menu is called, since all the menu entries must be kept enabled.

Maybe the text could contain a hint.

Maybe a checkbox or radio or ... can be added as indicator.

Otherwise, any one can write a 3rd party add on...
