How to get more in colours Lazarus.Terminal?

I just installed the libvte9 Lazarus.Terminal to try it out and the colours available are limited.

Is configuring it to support more colours something I need to do at runtime, or are there some additonal linux utilities which have to be executed in the terminal to get more colours?

I have tried the usual set TERM=xterm-256colors and so on, but still can't get the colours working properly.

Has anyone got it working with a large range of colours?
