Using Lazarus in Ubuntu 24.10 in a virtual machine [SOLVED]
« on: October 23, 2024, 05:45:59 pm »
* Mac Mini M1
* macOS 14.6.1
* Ubuntu Linux 24.10 via VMWare Fusion
* Lazarus 3.99
* FPC 3.3.1

I normally code in Lazarus in macOS 14.6.1 and I have built up a lot of muscle memory for all of the keystrokes associated with coding. I'm also using Lazarus in a VMWare Fusion VM running Ubuntu Linux 24.10. This morning I went into the Keymap settings within the Options hoping to make the keystrokes more Mac-like, only to discover that the Keymap settings in Linux do not give any option for the Cmd key )or the Meta key as it is also known).

I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to use a Linux version of Lazarus with their Mac hardware! Does anyone know if it can be done?

I'm not sure but I think you can map the cmd key to ctrl in the vmware settings of the vm (reboot the vm afterwards). After that you can set the mapping in Lazarus to the ctrl+key.

Thanks for the suggestion! In fact you have to take a more finely grained approach but essentially the trick is not to touch the Lazarus settings at all, but to add shortcuts for your favourite keystrokes from the Mac. It works perfectly! Thanks again 🙏
