Why not IRC? I know it's ancient but it is fast, free and efficient. Start a channel, stick a bot in it that can grant ops to selected users, spread the word and you have real time chat.

Search the forum for IRC...   ;)

I don't see any point in Discord. IMHO, this forum serves well. Why splinter?

Because there's no message threading.

IRC /definitely/ has its uses for e.g. low-traffic support requests, and to be honest those uses overlap significantly with Discord. But neither of them is really suitable for technical discussion where somebody asks a question (or proposes a course of action) which necessitates focused discussion which can- if necessary- be hard-copied and treated as "on record".

SMF, as used by the FPC/Lazarus forums and other "Ivy League" discussions such as EEVblog, is pretty good. In some ways the old Usenet-style protocols are better, but depending on the precise protocol there can be issues with generating a URI to refer to a specific message or sequence.

Lack of Markdown for code formatting, and other things like MarkMLI mentioned.

When I first discovered Lazarus and fpc I never imagined  that a valuable support resource that people need for getting help would be abandoned and tossed in the garbage.

What do you mean?  What's being abandoned?

Since the original topic "discord" had been settled, I am closing this thread.

After all, the non-mentioning of the name does not change that the topic shifted to "IRC".
It has been discussed at length, and concluded that different people have different opinions on the topic. (search the forum if interested).

And it has become clear, that any mention will prompt a repeat of the already presented opinions. Hence the ban of that topic. (unfortunate, but necessary)

Don't open a new thread on it.

In case of questions send me a PM.
