We want to share some huge developments in the Lazarus video and picture editing program VirtualU.
We stumbled onto some codecs that enable VirtualU to make MPG, MOV, MP4 and compressed AVI videos that have
exceptional quality, much higher than the usual compressed format quality and almost equal to the top quality of
uncompressed AVIs.
These codecs enabled us to develop our own brand of compressed videos called Alt. mode videos.
Fig. 1 shows an uncompressed AVI frame before edge softening has been applied. Fig. 2 shows that frame after it has
been edged with VirtualU. Fig. 3 shows a frame from a standard MPG made from the video shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows
a frame from an Alt. mode MPG also made from the edged AVI.
The standard MPG shown in Fig. 3 has pixelated, rather poor edging but the Alt. mode video shown in Fig. 4 looks even
better than the original edged AVI shown in Fig. 2. The reason that it looks better than the original is due to the inherent
softening effect that occurs when a compressed video is created. Not everybody knows about this but in some cases this
softening effect in compressed video can be as much as about 7 percent.
Alt. mode MPG, MOV, MP4 and compressed AVI videos play just fine on YouTube and they even do well with dark red
colors. The primary color red has an infamous reputation with compressed formats.
The only difference between uncompressed AVIs and the Alt. system is that an Alt. video will go mostly but not completely
transparent like an AVI will. However, with some editing Alt. mode videos can be made to go completely transparent.
Not too long ago our coder speculated on this Forum about how nice it would be if it were possible to reach inside a
compressed video and fix it up which was basically mere dreaming. However, the new Alt. process basically allows that to
happen in a different way, as the coder discovered.
The new Alt. mode is just amazing and more folks are using VirtualU.
We hope that they like it and that this reflects well on Lazarus. Best regards.
