Color property of TPanel - Linux GTK2

I have created an LED type of display using a TPanel with the Color property set to clBlack, containing several child TPanels for each item of information I want to display, which have the ParentColor set to True and Font.Color to clRed or clLime.

Under Windows it looks fine. Under Linux the TPanel retains the same color as the form, so the green and red fonts lose their contrast and don't show up too well.

I have reported this in the bug tracker, but I'm interested to know if this is just a minor thing that can easily be fixed, or whether a solution is likely to take months, as I need to decide whether to give up on the Linux version or try to come up with a workaround.
