Extending the IDE by adding a new message windows

Hi everyone, I want to extend the IDE by adding a new message windows. I am planning to use such a message window to print some output that comes from a serial port when the app runs. I am not sure how to start. Is it possible to add such a feature by using plugins? If so, can someone point me to an example? Please sorry if this is not the correct place for this post.
