Recompiling Lazarus for gnome

Hi guys,

thanks for a great IDE!

I'm new to both Lazarus and Linux so the learning curve in getting everything to work is quite steep.

I hope that I'm asking this question in the correct forum section, but here goes:

I'm currently trying to Rebuild Lazarus to use gnome instead of gtk as all the text looks large and ugly, both in the IDE and on my forms. I'm hoping that switching it over to gnome will make it look better. As I understand, I need to switch to gnome in the LCL interface configuration first, and then rebuild the IDE. However, when I perform the build, the following error appears:
make[2]: *** [../../units/i386-linux/gnome] Error 1

Perhaps the path is incorrect or something. I tried re-installing the latest debian package for the gnome units but that didn't solve anything. I'm sure I'm just missing something small, or there might be a user restriction on the path. I'm currently using Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

How are you building Lazarus?

You should use the Build Lazarus menu on the IDE.

Also, changing to gnome probably won´t change much, as it´s very gtk1 based. It´s probably better to try gtk2.

Hi sekel, I discovered this thread: http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=3326 which explains how to reduce the font sizes in the IDE. That thread lead me to this link: http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Lazarus_Faq#I_have_Ubuntu_Breezy_and_my_fonts_in_Lazarus_IDE_look_too_big which I followed and successfully changed the fonts to a smaller font.

However, I'm still not quite happy. I looked at you linux based Lazarus screenshots and there Lazarus looks fine with nice good sized crispy fonts. The large font I had, was absolutely horrible, and quite frankly, close to unreadable, unfortunately I can't attach a screenshot to show you. Now that it's smaller, it does look better, but is still looks stretched with jagged edges and in general is hard to read. I don't need to rebuild Lazarus for gnome if I can just get a smooth looking font to work. Looking at your screenshots, it MUST be possible to change the fonts to look like that, I hope someone can explain to a linux newbie how to do that.
