Can't insert data into file

So I'm using databases, I assigned datclient.dat file to it but it won't write the data in it, is there any example on how should I do it or? Also if you have a lot of clients/people in your database, how do you take only one of them and change them, let's say they have balance tab in the database, and I want to change their current balance how should I do it.
If anyone answers I will be really greatfull.
