DiskFree question
« on: April 16, 2016, 11:45:22 pm »
I did a Web and Forum search before posting this query and I can guess that some of you have run into this before but I'd like to understand it better.

When I use DiskFree to find out the free disk space on the hard drive, it always comes up with a figure that is 3 - 4 GB larger than the figure given by the Windows\My Computer estimate.

I suppose this is due to partitioning or something like that but I was wondering if there's a way to reconcile this so that my program knows exactly how much space is available.

First you need to be sure that the same definition of GB is being used in both instances. The IEC standard defines a gigabyte as 10^9 bytes, but I believe Microsoft define it as 2^30 bytes (which should be called a gibibyte).

I had forgotten the elementary stuff that I learned on this way back when but you and Wikipedia brought it all back to me. The figure that Windows reports is about 93% of what DiskFree shows. Windows is binary and DiskFree is decimal. Thanks
