Maybe I should ditch this Mint 17.2 Cinnamon altogether and go for a MATE system instead (if it behaves better in this respect)?
It does take getting used to BUT I can assure you that MATE does not behave like this. I've tried Lazarus on Mint MATE & Mint XFCE too. MATE is based on Gnome 2, an older desktop environment & it handles Lazarus windows better.
I am at the moment installing Mint17.3Mate-X64 in a new virtual machine to compare against.
Will take a while to get everything set up though...
Hopefully it will behave better regarding he taskbar.
Apart from that I do not expect it to be any different from what I had in 17.2Cinnamon.
I'll be back...

Now ready:
- installed Linux Mint 17.3 MATE X64
- Installed FPC 3.0.0
- Downloaded Lazarus release 1.6 sources and built bigide
- Started Lazarus
All seems OK so far.

There is no way I found to add the "Windows list with App grouping" in MATE but here at least Lazarus when minimized can be restored in full by clicking the "button" for Lazarus IDE. Works like Raspbian Jessie.
Still a lot of stuff on the taskbar, but I can live with that.

Question:
I have read about an alternate way of displaying Lazarus as one single window with the sub-windows docked together like in RAD Studio.
How can I test how this looks like?

Install Anchordocking($(LazrusDir)/components/anchordocking/design/anchordockingdsgn.lpk) and Sparta($(LazrusDir)/components/sparta/dockedformeditor/sparta_dockedformeditor.lpk) pacakges.  Then go to: Tools-->Destkops and import the following layout(see attachment).

MATE does not have "Windows list with App grouping" like Cinnamon BUT now your Lazarus taskbar windows will be easier to ùanage.

I have done this now and it looks OK after I have restarted Lazarus (before restart it looked really strange...).
And the toolbar buttons are reduced to one single Lazarus button! Exactly what I was after.  8)
Thanks for all help!

I'm glad it's working! You can customize it further by going to Tools-->Options--Environment-->Docking/Anchordocking. Check show headers, then drag, dock the windows as you like. After you done, go to Tools-->Desktop and press the "Save current desktop as" button. You can also configure a debug layout if you like. Don't forget to export the desktops to file, for future use.
