Pls support Double Commander
« on: February 22, 2015, 10:17:23 pm »
One the best two-pane (orthodox) file managers, Double Commander [http://doublecmd.sourceforge.net], is written in FreePascal.

This is an appeal to the FreePascal/Lazarus community to support its development.

Not only is Double Commander free, open source and cross-platform, but IMHO it is also the best file manager around. It's highly configurable (more than any other file manager I have tried, and I have tested them all, one by one) and rich in features.

In short, Double Commander is a jewel of FreePascal programming, a showcase piece, and really deserves to be supported and promoted.

Unfortunately, the developer is working on it mostly alone, so the pace of development is very slow. On their forum you see dozens of posts requesting this or that feature, but only very few features actually get to be implemented, because of lack of human resources (read: lack of developers). Also, many of the reported bugs have yet to be fixed, for the same reason.

Now, the point of this post is: PLEASE support this fantastic project by contributing to it, either as developers, or beta testers, or even as mere users.
Use the program, spread the word.
Your help may make a drastic difference in the development of Double Commander.

Disclaimer: I am not the developer, nor am I in any way linked to him.

Thanks

The lack of developers is problem of many open-source projects. Coincidentally, a few days ago I reported bug for DC (1018).
I agree with you, DC needs more features. The one I miss is that it does not remember column widths after restart.
Lazarus 2.3.0 (rev main-2_3-2863...) FPC 3.3.1 x86_64-linux-qt Chakra, Qt 4.8.7/5.13.2, Plasma 5.17.3
Lazarus 1.8.2 r57369 FPC 3.0.4 i386-win32-win32/win64 Wine 3.21

Try Eye-Candy Controls: https://sourceforge.net/projects/eccontrols/files/

That's the common problem we have in many unpaid open source projects. After all, that's how open source world works. Those who want AND can will contribute automagically, no need to ask. Those who only want or only want will not. Free Pascal team lacks of compiler masters to implement many optimizations and advanced features. From the current team, AFAIK only 5 or less people contributing to the compiler part. The rest works on RTL, libraries and packages. That's a big difference from GCC/Clang which has commercial backup with thousands (ok, perhaps less, but not as little as FPC) of contributors.

Yes, and many other bugs too. It's a pity that there are only so few people willing to help...

Have someone contributed to Double Commander? I want to take care for two issues, which prevent me from switching to it, but I have no idea who shall be contacted, no response on the email, no hint in the DC forum.

And he is always happy with support. He is also very active!! here.
If he needs financial or hardware support we would have known. (But possible, at least from my side since I use it a lot)

objects are fine constructs. You can even initialize them with constructors.

DC is my primary and only file manager (Linux and Windows). And given you can extend it with lua is cherry on top. I have a few shortcuts assigned to custom lua scripts and it's a game changer. I am so hooked into DC that I can't see files if they are not colored the way I have set up based on attributes.  :D %)

@Alexx2000 and Alexey-T (cudatext) are absolute gems. Alexey-T has helped me multiple times with my issues on GitHub.

I've been using Double Commander for a few years now. I was used to Total Commander at my previous employer, but where I work now we don't have that. That's why I now use Double Commander and I don't notice any difference for what I do with it. Great tool. I have to admit that I have never even downloaded the code of Double Commander. I don't know if I would get it running. Let alone that I could fix bugs.

@Alexx2000's Double Commander website is really impressive:
https://doublecmd.sourceforge.io/gallery/

It looks nothing like the older projects we got used to see hosted on SourceForge.

I've made a .WCX64 plugin to unpack rar files which I believe is better than existing RAR handling because it's pure pascal so can be compiled for any platform (might need some platform specific adjustments, tested only on Windows).
But I don't know how to submit the plugin to the developers.
