PS: I thought Jonas Maebe had given a good explanation of the differences on the FPC? Lazarus? mailing list... I dare not say something that may contradict him because he's usually right ;)

Some time ago I have initiated such a discussion on free pascal mailing list. http://lists.freepascal.org/pipermail/fpc-pascal/2014-February/041122.html

Jonas Maebe advised me to choose GPLv2+linking exception or LGPLv2+static linking exception. He also said that they are the same thing. http://lists.freepascal.org/pipermail/fpc-pascal/2014-February/041124.html

And Marco van de Voort advised me to choose GPLv2+linking exception too. http://lists.freepascal.org/pipermail/fpc-pascal/2014-February/041132.html

So I really think my code is useable in any kind of project without contaminating users code. The only problem is that people seems to be affraid by GPL...

Yes, they (and I) are afraid of plain GPL.

And GPL+linking exception is quite uncommon, much more uncommon than LGPL+linking exception. That may be why people may not read further than "GPL" and immediately think it's GPL only...

well lets assume that all linux libraries become gpled that would make linux unfeet for any commercial use and permanently banned from any corporation. Forget linux on the desktop and all that if no corporation requires linux skills there is no way I will install linux on my desktop. It is good to try to have some kind of equilibrium but if it becomes a problem then you are effectively killing off your own child.

Yeah, I'am the enemy for FSF, because of proprietary software.
I love FSF who sees enemies everywhere and war.

No software using corporation cares about the details of the software.

They just care about their data.

And that is not affected by the gpl/lgpl issue.

Is that why they are not using fpc?

I can't comment on fpc usage patterns I do not have enough data to make any kind of assumption. I can only talk about my experience so far and yes GPL is the main reason to not use a tool-library in most of the companies I worked with.
