Hi,

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but can applications developed using Lazarus-Freepascal be compatible for Intel Atom computers ??

I use a intel i3 laptop to develop applications for both linux (Ubuntu 12.04) and Windows 7, they work very well on the laptop.

Recently I have been asked to install them on a Intel atom based touch panel PC, that, would run on Windows XP/Windows 7, or Ubuntu. Can the application be run on this also ??

Also by using the arm cross-compiler I know applications can run on Win CE (ARM based), but can they also be run on Windows Compact 7 OS ??

Actually there is a wide choice of touch panel PCs available I think avoiding a cross-compiler would be best for me as I can develop applications on my laptop and deploy them straight to the panel PC.

Thanks
nm

I thought that Intel Atom is compatible with i386. I think it is different than ARM which is different architecture.
I wanted to be sure about this information, so that I have commented on this question.

btw. Notify feature is not working, which should be used on my case to follow a question. It gives me "Invalid session"

It is compatible with i386. I use a netbook with an Intel Atom 1,6 GHz processor with a regular WinXp and a Xubuntu. I have installed Lazarus on both OSes and it works.
IMHO, most of netbooks use this processor.

If Lazarus can deal with touchscreens, I see no reason why it shall not work with Intel Atom, AMD, or even Cyrix.

I'm not sure it works on Windows Compact 7. Have you tried though? It might be that it's somewhat compatible with Windows CE

no I have not as I am still in the process of buying a touch panel PC. I know applications created on lazarus (cross compiler based) run very well on Win CE OS (arm based).

The TouchPanel PC that I am mostly likely to buy would be an Intel Atom based, with 2 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD. The operating system is Windows 7 Embedded (Win CE is no longer installed by manufacturers).

So with the above configuration do I still need to use the cross compiler ?? The processor is Intel Atom and not ARM so maybe the x86 version of compiler will work ??

Also is Windows 7 embedded different from Windows Embedded Compact 7 ??? Could anyone enlighten me on this ?? Meanwhile I am going to search in the internet for data...

Please help me in this as I have limited knowledge here..

thanks

I became curious, why don't you buy a Intel Atom device with a regular Windows? Is there a significant price difference?

Windows 7 Embedded is standard Windows 7 without some desktop futures.
Main difference is license and price. Lower price with limitation of use only on embedded device, like OEM license.
Lazarus will run fine on this device.
Don't mess this OS with Win CE or Win Mobile, this is different product.
There is also Windows 8 Embedded and Windows Server Embedded.

yes as ttomas pointed out price is a factor.

Another question is it possible to cross-compile lazarus applications for Linux -ARM (32 bit) based devices ??

I know there is a cross-compiler for windows CE arm based devices. But what about linux-arm based devices ??

thanks

It's possible. It takes a bit of time to set up but once it's running, compiling and deployment is easy.
