We should be smart ... ban spam
« on: October 22, 2013, 10:58:34 am »
35 posts in as many hours. http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,22388.0.html User aminer keeps using the lazarus forum as his personal blog and flood it with his chatter. An idea springs to his confused mind and he drops a post. Several polite and not so polite requests to edit his previous posts and correct mistakes instead of reposting modified posts have been without result. Requests to stop spamming the forum and start his private blog to store his mental wanderings have been without result. Showing him that his code is just crap and that he doesn't understand the fundamentals he is writing about have been without success. Showing that his code just violates licencing conditions of the original code he used have been without result. Several requests to moderators to warn or stop this user have been without result.

So please help us to get our forum back, cleaned of all his rubbish and vote.

When you vote, please add a comment so that this poll stays high in the recent posts.

Yes, it is time to stop this.

Personally I think this thread is as inappropriate (if not more), as the thread by animer.

I have not read all of his posts, and so I can not judge their quality; or if his replies are answers to the question or not.

In the reported thread are a lot of posts by others, so it is not pure self advertising (aka spam).
I do have the time to inspect every single of his posts. On the surface many of them look like replies.

From the post of others, it appears that many miss the point of the question. If so, and if it is apparent that they intentionally miss the point, then they should be regarded as spam.
Question is: Could there be other reasons? Such as language barrier?

IMHO: the best is to stop fuelling the fire. Stop asking/commenting. If then there are still an high amount of posts from him, then it will be easier to judge them as spam
(e.g. ruling that while users are allowed and invited to announce their work (of any quality), they should not announce the same work repeatedly in a short period of time.

Martin, I think it's unfair to dismiss this thread while not having read aminer's posts.

I have read tons of them. Ludob's summary in the first post is quite accurate.

Repeated requests to him and the mods have not resulted in any change. Discussing this behaviour out in the open is IMO a reasonable thing to do as long as it is done decently.

You will also see in aminer's threads that there are multiple people who have problems with his style - so it's something that bothers more than one person.

No, they definitely are not replies. In fact, he tends not to engage in 2 way conversation at all. It's all one way, with rare exceptions (e.g. insults).

No, not a lot of posts. Compared to his torrent, it's only a trickle.
Most of these tell him to stop spamming, and add suggestions on what to do (e.g. correct his posts instead of posting the same thing with some spelling mistakes fixed etc).

He doesn't listen.

Sorry, could be a language issue here, too but what do you mean? What question?

If you think he's posting a lot of things because of language barriers - well, there's tons of people on the forum whose apparent command of English is much worse. These people do tend to not post excessively, in fact, the reverse: they tend to post very short messages, often omitting information needed to help them, probably because writing the posts is hard and they're afraid to make mistakes.

I don't see the point. He's posting excessively with or without comments. There are plenty of his threads in the Third party announcements subsection. Look for some without many questions/comments. They show the same behaviour.

Finally: you're asking others to stop posting so his one way "communication" is more clear? In effect, you're asking everybody else to back off so he gets to use the forum as his personal blog?

That suggestion just doesn't make sense. I suggest instead you and/or other admins get in touch with aminer and try and get him to modify his behaviour or ban his account.

To clarify my last statement:
- I do not know/judge, if there is a case against him.
- I do not object to pursuing that a case, and acting on it.

I do however think, that this thread/poll is not the appropriate way to deal with the situation.

Ok, I understand that. However, all other avenues are exhausted (messages to aminer, requests to moderators).

The problem is that this thread is in the wrong form.

It is a pure opinion poll.

Instead there could have been an open question to the moderators, as to what and why was done, or is planed to be done.

What about to create a topic "Ostracism", for example in Lazarus » Forum » Miscellaneous » Other » Ostracism, and to implement a way to detect and send every post from @aminer to there?

Open questions where addressed to moderators inside some of the aminer threads. With a "report to moderator" at the same time to attract their attention to the question. Never a single reaction.

I agree that this should have never come that far. But nothing else worked. This is the last and final, desperate move that is left. We are beyond the question of right or wrong form here.

The concept of spam until now was reserved to topics in this forum as "buy cheap Viagra" (commercial self advertising). This thread is extending the concept to a new range of meanings.

I don't know whether it is appropriate.

This thread does not belong in 3rd party (and I'll move it to misc/other at the end of the day).
I ignored postings from animer for a while. I'll have some reading
