I’ve an opportunity to read and review a book by Roderick Person - "Getting Started with Lazarus IDE". It was published by Packt Publishing. If you want to know what was my impression – please read the review on Turing’s Man blog, here:

http://turingsman.net/index.php/my-blog-list/163-getting-started-with-lazarus-ide-by-roderick-person-review

Also, as I try to advocate not only for the book, but also for Lazarus/FreePascal as much as I can, I decided to provide some background on Pascal language at all, including my personal belief that with 1.x versions of Lazarus we can expect a significant increase in overall popularity (I hardly can compare Lazarus/FreePascal code robustness to virtual machine-based technologies like .NET or Java).

Honestly, the popularity of Lazarus/FreePascal depends on our support – the community is important. We not only have to use Lazarus/FreePascal, but also we should write books, promote the tools and spread the good word all over the Internet. I believe Lazarus/FreePascal can be placed into very important niche on the market.

Hence, I’ve found Roderick Person’s book an important event – especially because it is addressed mainly to former or current Delphi developers. What is the most important – I liked the way it was written – compact, solid material. However, please note – it is my opinion!

Regards,
Pawel Wawrzyniak

PS. "Thumb Up" icon, for this message, is for the book by Roderick Person! :-)

Nice review. Maybe some link to this book should be added to Bookstore on the left. More books in Bookstore will definitely give better impression to visitors.
Lazarus 2.3.0 (rev main-2_3-2863...) FPC 3.3.1 x86_64-linux-qt Chakra, Qt 4.8.7/5.13.2, Plasma 5.17.3

Yes, I am impressed, too.

With regard to the Bookstore, I would also suggest to add Howard Page-Clark's excellent book Learn to program using Lazarus (http://www.blaisepascal.eu/index.php?actie=./subscribers/UK_Book_Department_LearnToProgramUsingLazarus).
function GetRandomNumber: integer; // xkcd.com
begin
GetRandomNumber := 4; // chosen by fair dice roll. Guaranteed to be random.
end;

Nice review.

Nice advertisement rather. They asked Lazarus devels to promote the book, now they found somebody else.
I am the technical reviewer of the book. I used much time and energy to correct the numerous errors.
Then I expected to have a second round of review but there wasn't any.
As a salary, I was promised to get a copy of the book when it is published, but I got it only after asking a few times.
Some of the errors were fixed but not all, and it still concentrates partly on wrong things.
There were some links to internet which worked during my review. Now they don't exist any more.

Now my name is there as "Technical Reviewer" in a book with quite many errors. Not good.
Not really recommended by me.
Mostly Lazarus trunk and FPC 3.2 on Manjaro Linux 64-bit.

Had a look at the book edit: table of contents - missed chapters on database development... Depends on what you call "getting started" of course, but if you have a chapter on building your own components and Delphi conversion, a chapter on db wouldn't be out of context...

Reading Juha's comments: mmm, sad that Packt publishing publishes this then... I've bought some books from them which are quite good.
