Switching off backlight

Hello,

Anybody here who knows how to write a small program to switch off the backligt of the screen of a notebook computer?

I am talking about notebooks running on Linux.

PS. I know I can use: xset -display :0.0 dpms force off

But it would be nice to be able to incorporate it in a program.
