Found Delphi Informant BACKISSUES
« on: July 07, 2011, 08:51:52 pm »
I just ran across what I hope is the ultimate source for Delphi/Pascal programming 'tricks'. There was a magazine called Delphi Informant that was stocked by Barnes and Noble, Borders bookstores magazine rack that was the only mag available for Delphi way back when from the early Delphi years. I remember some really cool undocumented tricks being shown on a regular basis. A lot of times it would be things/tricks not covered in any of the 30lb books that are available. Really excited about this find..... 207megs torrent file.

Anyone know the back-story on what happend to this cool mag? Looks like it's Blaize Pascal now who is filling this role, and equally as well it seems (same general style of showcasing new ideas/products/tecniques). A Backissues library of the two mags Blaise and Delphi Informant would be awesome to have.

Anyone know if you can get backissues for delphi Informant anywhere (actual mags). Also I looked at Blaise and did'nt find mention of backissue availability. Anyone know if available?

Here is the file...

https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=F47E857F7A816873&id=F47E857F7A816873!346

If I locate some 'gems' in this file I will 'bookmark' it here.

Here is one article on building an improved TSlider component (TTrackbar) from september 1995 that is helpful for me at the moment. really good and in depth coverage of the subject.

Don't know what you mean. Is it legal, not copyrighted or something is it? I assume it would be public domain. Is  that what you mean?

What Marc means is that if no one is seeding, the file can't be downloaded. The torrent file only connects you to computers which has the targeted file on their disk already. Your download is their upload. That is how torrent system works, there is no "central server" hosting the file. After you download the file, you should seed it (allow download of this file from your computer) when you are on line. When there are no seeders, the file cannot be downloaded.

Sorry. New to the torrent download concept.  :-[

I will look into it.

I downloaded ~80% of the torrent yesterday and now I also cannot connect to download the rest. I can hardly be seeder with my crapy internet connection, FUP limit and without public IP adress (afaik).
Anyway, I looked to issue from september '95 to design of TSliderBar and we cannot use it directly. Reason is that there are drawing outside Paint method which should work for Win & GTK2 but not for Qt4 & Carbon. But still usable code - with small changes.
Lazarus 2.3.0 (rev main-2_3-2863...) FPC 3.3.1 x86_64-linux-qt Chakra, Qt 4.8.7/5.13.2, Plasma 5.17.3

That is the wild thing about it. I got 1995 and 2005 confused I guess. I really thought to myself 'bummer the earliest issues are not here'. But no, 1995 is day one Delphi. (Which I was blessed to be a part of via Paradox). There are some really cool concepts/tricks that even Delphi 1 examples can teach, still to this day. That is a serious testimony to the solidness of Pascal.

Can we load it onto the Wiki server or something? It is public domain I hope? If not it would be good to have. Better than books in a lot of ways. Would be happy to pay I need to. Who though Blaise (didn't they buy rights to Informant?)

Torrent you pasted here contians issues 1995 - 2000. I googled a little  and in 2006, when Delphi Informant Magazine ended, they released CD with all issues from 1995-2005. It is available as 610MB *.iso (separated to 5 *.rar archives) on RapidShare. Unfortunally, it didn't work for me on Linux. I tried to decompress and enter the *.iso (with K3B, Ark and FuseISO) but no luck. I don't know if it is now still under copyright (5-6 years after they ended).

Thanks Blaazen.

Say any chance you could check into it? You probably understand how to handle it more than me, honestly.

If all is clear I will upload it on my GoogleDocs or something if need be.
Or set up a torrent from my system, whatever you suggest.

Thanks

I downloaded the entire set through the torrent on Thursday with no probs..  I left transmission running to seed, but after a day there were no hits.  I just turned it back on and will leave it running if it will help anyone.  In the meantime, I am very much interested in the 1995-2005 iso - let's get it on a torrent!

geno.

Here you have the link to 10-years Anniversary Edition CD 1995-2005:
http://rapid-search-engine.com/?s=cache:2750743:10+years
But as I mentioned above: It doesn't work for me in Linux. K3B says: 'It does not look like valid ISO.' Maybe some special Win-only format?
