Thank you, Marc.
However, I think that more useful would be if we could get the list of recently changed topics instead (same appearance that we can get for recent unread topics, but not filtered to unread). Could you provide such view?
Actually we have it now on right side of the forum, but limited to ten topics. Could we have a link which gives us full list?

[SOLVED] Not seeing General/Programming section
« Reply #92 on: July 15, 2011, 07:30:52 am »
Still NOT RESOLVED, but here's some interesting thing I found:

I went to another computer and I do see what I consider "normal", which is what I was getting initially as far as the sections that appear upon entering the forum. I e-mailed me that web address. I went to this computer that I use, opened the e-mail and clicked on the address and THEN the usual sections appear.

However, upon using that link, I am not recognized by the forum, so I had to sign in.

But as soon as I sign in, THEN the sections DO NOT APPEAR, and I have the same problem described in original post.

So I trace the problem, and it relates to cookie of Firefox Windows XP.

I delete cookies and Saved Password (by Firefox).

So I open the forum again, I am not signed in, and I see all the sections.

And AGAIN, as soon as I am signed in, I can not see the sections.

So the issue is surely that THE FORUM restricts me from seeing those sections in the initial menu, and there's NOTHING (apparently that I can do here). So the problem is not FireFox nor my setup.

However, when signed in, I can see OWN POSTS, and via them, I can get to the General-Programming questions.

So, HOW can that restriction of the forum be removed? Can I remove it?

I don't recall doing anything that could relate to what's happening.

Thanks if anyone could help clear this out.

@elmug:
on the top right you have 3 [ - ]/[ + ] buttons. With those you van collapse, expand panels to the left right and bottom. If you are not logged in you get the default view. When you are logged in you get the view as you choose the last time. So if you have collapsed a panel, it will stay collapsed on all PCs unless you expand it again.

@zoran:
this forum is 3rd party software. Adding an existing link is not a big deal, just adding a php line at certain location. Changing (coded) layout or adding different logic, means a lot of php changes to the existing forum software. To be able to upgrade in the future, I try to keep the changes as minimal as possible. The change of the header removed already a lot of existing code. Besides this, I'm a pascal programmer and not a PHP writer.

To make things a bit more complicated, this site consists of 2 combined packages, where some functionality is presented by the forum software (the list of recent topics) while other parts are presented by the portal software (the panels left and right).

So unless there is a link to the "requested" layout,  there is a little chance of getting it changed (unless someone provides a patch)

I understand completely, I was hoping that such a link might exist already, so that you can simply put it somewhere on the forum layout.

Thank you.

Marc,

THANK YOU very much with your reply, have [SOLVED] it now.

SOLVED....I had, inadvertently somehow CLOSED the Programming Section from view.

Opened it by clicking on the still showing heading called "Programming" wile logged in, then closed the browser, and now the Programming-Section of the Forum always appears open.

I also have password saved by FireFox, and set at the forum login to always keep me logged in.

It's all great now.

Thanks everyone.

A suggestion on forum page
« Reply #96 on: July 15, 2011, 06:20:36 pm »
I had recently a problem where I could not see the General-Programming list of posts.

I believe now that what caused my problem is that in the Header for ALL sections of the forum, there is a Legend for "Unread Posts" and very close to its right is a little square [] where one can click onto.

Now, those two items ("Unread Posts) and the [] clickable SQUARE are so close that I most likely cliked on te [] thinking that it was to take me to the Unread Posts, but all it did was collapse the view out of the Programming Section.

So maybe "Unread Posts" moved further to the left, from the [-] square would avoid this happening to others. I now see that all Section Headers are alike.

That way it'd be much less likely that one click on the [-] when one rather wants to see the Unread Posts.

Actually though, the functionality and design of this forum is, to me,  one of the best i've used.

Thanks for considering.

Just a little annoyance.

If, after reading messages, I click on "Mark all messages as read" one used to then end up at the index page of the forum.
Lately however, I either end up at http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php (the main "home" page) or http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php?action=forum (the forum index). It seems rather unpredictable where I'll end up at.
I prefer ending up at the forum index page...

You press "mark all read" on a "show unread" page or on a (sub) forum page ?

I can't try that right now (it would mark all my messages read). I'll do later with a different account.

If I press "Mark all read" on a "Show unread" page http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php?action=unread it brings me to same "Show unread" page with "No unread topics found since your last visit. Click here to try all unread topics."

See my original post in Reply #97: it sometimes does that for me too, sometimes it does not.

Ditto for me - after clicking on "Mark All Unread", I'm deposited onto the Home page and I would prefer to stay on the Forum page.

You have said that it brings you to Home Page or to Forum Index, in my case it brings me to same page of Unread Messages (http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php?action=unread)
