Startup Under linux?

im Running Ubuntu 10.04, i finished my application and i was wondering how can i make it add itself to startup as a check box option?
i used to do it with simple registry Read/Delete Value, but i dunno what to do under linux.
will my app need to be running as root to do such thing?
