Possible for internal debugger to work with external symbols?

I see the option for Lazarus to create an external debugger symbol file.  Is there any way to get the internal Lazarus debugger to work with those external symbols?

GDB needs to be configured where to find these files. I haven't tried it myself with the files FPC generates. (but I have tried it with the external debug files I installed for gtk2)
