Lazarus on Linux and widget sets

Hi everybody.
As a newbie to free pascal and lazarus I'm not quite sure which widget set to choose. So I'd like to ask some questions to the community.

Are there any limitations using gtk1 concerning functionality of lcl components, such as displaying text, colorizing etc.?

Is the package gtk2forpascal needed or recommended to use gtk2 with lazarus?

gtk2 is not fully functional atm.
afaik is the package not needed anymore (I'm not sure)

Well, I just tried gtk2 without installing gtk2forpascal, but it is true, it doesn't work properly. So it seems all one can do is sit and wait, until it works.
