Title: Polished version of the Cheetah gif.
Post by: gwrede on March 02, 2021, 07:25:14 pm
Hi, everybody!

I first encountered Free Pascal in 1998 or 1999, when browsing everything Pascal on the net. I've used Turbo Pascal since 2.0, on CP/M, in Orwell's Year, 1984. (In 2000, I switched to D (aka Dlang).)

The first time I saw the Cheetah logo I thought "How cool is that!" -- But ever since that day I've had a hard time accepting how it moves unnaturally. I wished I had the know-how and tools to do something about it. And ever since, when checking the site, It's been a pet peeve of mine.

During the years I have converted quite a few people to Free Pascal. (D is not for every use case.)

-----

Now, the other day it occurred to me that I now have the tools and skills to do the job.

The thing you notice when watching a real Cheetah run and hunt is that it keeps its head still and level!

I fixed that, and tried to otherwise not change the logo.

-----

Legalese: I give the Copyright to my changes to the logo to the Free Pascal Community.

Also: I fully understand there are a ton of reasons to /not/ update the logo. But just in case, find my file attached to this post.

Thank you!

I 'd vote for __some__ head movement, because when I see
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaV1_M2j200
the head moves a little.

I agree. The head is too stable. It's not natural. However your animation is fine.

Totally agree with AlexTP and Blaazen. Fine animation, but completely fixed head is unnatural.

I totally disagree with the comments so far :) It revised GIF looks more realistic to me. Yes, I watched the video.

If only then slightly backward and forward movement of head should be added.

(at 2:51 it's all about free pascal)

It's really satisfying to look at this new cheetah movements.

Stabilization is never ideal. And in the videos provided it is not ideal too. So, some slight movements msut be.

Could you provide an animated scalable vector graphic (SVG)? Then it can easily be scaled for mobile, normal screens or huge displays while it still looks fine on all ;)

I’ve “improved” the logo.  :D :P

I actually hate it, but I hate all kinds of fast and restless GIF animations. I have the logo blocked because of that.

Hi!

Here you have the version with a bobbing head. Is this better?

I also like the second animation better.

Wow on both of the videos links! What an impressive animal. Good choice for Lazarus logo.

had to register to see the attachment. encountered Lazarus first time today. i like what i've read of it and will use. i made some things in Delphi long ago having been taught to code in Pascal and it was good and useful. i was both intrigued and irritated by the cheetah logo bottom of Lazarus page. intrigue was answered by seeing it's the FP logo, next i find history of that. irritation was sorted by your effort here. i don't know how you did it but you've done a great job of correcting the animation. ps in my reading noticed the name Lazarus has to be explained for some people; we already encountered the name at school and then relatively soon after, this was cemented in memory by being the name given to AmigaDOS disks "repaired" by the official program DiskDoctor

[edited to add a comma. the one before "this was cemented in memory by being ..."]
