Title: Where do you publish your programs?
Post by: domasz on March 17, 2023, 11:37:11 am
Do you make any programs for general public? Where do you publish them?

I used to create a .PAD file and submit it but:
1) less and less websites accept .PAD files.
2) many websites require a payment to publish your app (even $400)
3) there is less and less websites with software

The is a Windows store from Microsoft but not a single Windows user I know downloads anything from that store.

I make Windows apps for now. Freeware mostly but also commercial ones with trial modes.

I am guessing your question is restricted to Windows Apps ?  I publish my app via github and more than half my downloads are Windows users.

But I recently had a user ask for me to make it available via https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/package-manager/ - I have not had time to do it yet but it does look pretty reasonable. But the app needs to live on (eg) github initially.

Putting closed source application on Github doesn't sound like a good idea

Are you apps Windows specific?

if not, how about going after the Mac market? Supposedly Mac users are more likely to pay for software.

Windows right now. To create a MacOS build I would need a Mac.

Your best bet is get some web space and try and drive traffic from sites like face book and twitter, you if your doing some freeware there are many free software submission sites available I was looking myself a few months back and I found a good few of them you just need to search around.

Also if you got any freeware you can submit them to give away sites this will also get traffic for your sites and people may even decide to buy your commercial software. You basically need to spread the word anyway possible. I really look into SEO methods you can do on your own. You could also look into creating software for Mac or Linux you can use a virtual machine I heard you can also install Mac on a PC just do a search in google there a few good tuts

No, its sure not the spirit of GitHub but Microsoft now owns Github....

When you put a binary up in the release page of a github project, as far as I know, there is no requirement that it be built from published source. There certainly is not any checks any way. But a while since I read the fine print.

There are a lot of paid, closed source projects there, that is how githhub pays its way.
