Title: Happy and safe Christmas
Post by: dbannon on December 25, 2021, 07:46:37 am
As someone coming from a part of the world that sees Christmas earlier than most :

OK, to some of our community here it is a religious time, for some its social or holiday time, for some its not relevant at all. But in ALL cases, I wish you well over this period of time. Keep safe !

Personally, we have just finished a stupidly large meal, with lots of family and a very happy time.  I would like to think everyone here could be so happy.

Thank you 440bx, you have surprised me, but yes, it is the typical hispanic phrase of greetings. Do you speak Spanish?

Yes, I do but, for computer lingo, I do much, much better in English.

Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!

Anybody can get depressed at this time of year, with the short days and overcast skies, so I always try to give those around me a reason to be positive.

After about the 12th December, Sunset will start getting later.

Roughly the 21st December is the shortest day.

On about the 25th December, noon (i.e. the point at which the Sun is at its highest point) is at 12:00. The relationship is complex, based on the ellipticity and obliquity of the Earth's orbit around the Sun (few people challenge me on this).

After about the 1st January, Sunrise gets earlier.

I remember when the British government tried to stay on UTC+1 for the entire year, circa 1971. It was extremely unpleasant in the winter: I'd be far happier to stay on GMT, which in some ways would be appropriate since after all we invented this stuff :-)

I'd like to see the Midnight Sun, but my father told me it was nothing special: he was a guest of the Germans in Norway at the time.

Some years ago, an RC teacher said that "We're told that we should now use green chalkboards, since it is more relaxing on the eyes. But the Good Lord made the whole World green..."

If anybody's still reading this, please consider this as important: there's various SAD treatments based on bright light, but my experience suggests that the important thing is to have a very wide angle display of green light. So come on, chaps: if you feel miserable, get outside, find a public park or footpath route and move around rather than staying at home feeling sorry for yourselves.

Thats great !  What a pity they have messed up a good joke by confusing Australia with Austria. Looks like a fair bit of effort went into it too.
(you need to click the button labeled "Austrian Version")

May be this confusing is made intentionally, as one more joke (like about american tourist in Austria - "And where are the kangaroo?").

Yes it is - check the link https://www.x360ce.com/Files/Website_x360ce/Australia_and_Austria_Big.jpg to the right of the "European version" link.  :D

Or people that try to compare the economy of the Australasia region to the Austrasia region. (hint, the latter's numbers are hard to find, and no, Austrasia is not Austra(LA)sia without Los Angeles included)

Back in the 1990s I used to buy a lot of O'Reilly books when on holiday in the USA and post them back to Australia which was still much cheaper than buying them locally because the local distributor charged 2.5x the US cover price and I rarely had to even pay the cover price in the USA at the likes of Borders or Barnes and Noble. Anyway, one time when posting three parcels of books back to Australia from the main PO in San Francisco, two parcels ended up in Austria before finally arriving in Australia some months later :)
