Title: We moved our forum to another machine and another software
Post by: Paul Ishenin on December 19, 2008, 04:57:01 pm
As you can see this forum uses SMF as engine. The old forum was based on phpBB. We hope you will enjoy the new features and speed. Use your old forum account to login.

It's nice and faster, but I miss direct link to bug tracker on the left pane.

This engine is working much faster! (maybe you've also changed the server??).
Anyhow, SMF is a perfect choise, and, IMO, it is the best open-soruce forums engine (in the many-functional engines category, not lighweight ones).

Thanks!

Please ignore me if and when I go off on a rant.

I see the new forum is much faster, but I also see it hasn't taken the spammer vermin long to find it. :( Unfortunately SMF doesn't seem to have much in the way of tools to keep the scum out (I speak from experience as I'm a moderator of some boards on another SMF forum.)

I thought I'd need to re-register, but now I see that the old login works OK...

We had our first spammer after 10 mins being public.
I already enabled email registration which resulted in 1 of the 50 bots is coming through.
I increased the captcha level, but I wonder if it will help.

The only problem is that it is difficult to see what is written there not only for bots but for real people now.

I don't think a captcha helps. I've been told spanners employ humans from India or China or somewhere to register with forums and upload this junk. The other forum I mentioned has a captcha and it gets more spam than real registrations. We switched to manual authorization of new subscribers, but it's a ham radio forum and most people either register with their callsign or their name, or have this in their email address, so it's easy to spot who is genuine. With some of the names people use on here I don't think you could.

To keep spam out of my guestbooks people have to answer a question that only someone with a legitmate interest in the site would know the answer to. But no-one has produced a mod for SMF that provides that sort of functionality - at least, I couldn't find one.

if you try to register you'll find that currently we asking some questions from child arithmetic.

No offense to anybody, but I don't like this new engine. I preferred the look and feel of the old one, everything was clear to read in that one, this one is always difficult to read.
Also when going to the main lazarus page (when it loads) we select forum, we come here and again we have to select forum, that's not user friendly.
I didn't notice a lot of speed until now.

I only notice lazarus.freepascal.org loads only after several times i try

Thanks for the feedback. The link to the forum now jumps directly to the forum index on this site.

It will also be nicer and more professional if the forum would be integrated into the same interface as the website,
look at PClinuxos.org to have an idea of what I mean. THey also use SMF

We will do the otherway around. SMF as engine end use TinyPortal as frontend to keep things simple. However due to some bugs in TP we cannot use all functionality atm.

Finally the forum is getting loaded whenever I want :)

Greets,
Kunstbanause

PS:
The link for the big "FORUMS" button in the WIKI hasn't been changed yet. It still redirects to the old site  ;)

I have just one tiny remark.

The fontsize in quote and code tags is very small, I can hardly read it.
You cannot use size=xxpt insize code or quote tags.

Can this be changed somehow in the configuration files/scripts for this forum?

Some tiny remarks:

In the menu on the left:
"Useful Wiki Links" points to nothing (href is not specified)
"Getting the source" points to "http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/Getting_Lazarushttp://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/Getting_Lazarus"
(Looks like someone pasted the url twice ;-) )

Usefull wikilinks is a menu-header, it cannot have an url.

Getting the source is fixed, I indeed double pasted. The editbox to enter urls is very small, you only see "http://wiki.lazarus.fre", so hard to see if you did it wrong.

Thanks for reporting

Ah, on Windows it looked like the menu-items above it (now on Linux with newer FF it is more clear).
The menu-header has a hoover effect of underlining the text, which I (and I guess more) suggested it was in fact a link.
(It is surrounded by anchor (<a>) tags)
Maybe fiddle with the css?, but only if you have too much time on your hand  :)

Hi, I noticed that the forum is now using PNG images.
I like PNG's a lot, because of their transparency, size is small enough and quality, but I have discovered that PNG's are not always the best ofr websites.
I suggest to use a JPG or GIF image for the Lazarus logo, this will make it smaller and paint faster.

When we now search on a search engine for some info, it links to the old website and it gives an error.
Example
http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=239 (http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=239)

My suggestion is to redirect what's not found to the homepage.
(I think the .htaccess should be modifyed)

Should there not be a Chat button on the left side?
I new about this:
http://widget.mibbit.com/?settings=5f4df427b2e5b4a9ae0095de26715816&server=irc.freenode.net&channel=%23lazarus-ide&autoConnect=true&nick=mb_laz_%3F%3F%3F

only because of looking Vincent Snijders profile on the wiki, and like me others may not know about the chat.

no need for .htaccess (when we have full server control). Anyway, all modules.php stuff is redirected

Is it possible to put the logo on the top bar? As I can see, pclinuxos.org also uses S.M.F, only with a different theme. They have the logo on the top. Is it a theme specific "feature" of the theme they use, or can it also be done here?

Their forum is run as part of a joomla website. THe header isn't part of the forum. Anyway, this is how my header looks like. A logo wont fit there.
