Title: A forum board for fpc's embedded targets
Post by: d.ioannidis on December 07, 2018, 04:19:22 pm
Hi,

is it possible to add a board for the fpc's embedded targets ?
With child boards avr, arm etc ?

It will make life easy for the one who searches the forum for those platforms.

regards,

No reply after so many days ….

I assume that there is no critical mass for embedded in the community ….

 :(

I support your request. Not that many people are actively using fpc for AVR, probably because one has to use trunk to get decent functionality. A lot of patches have been included in the next release branch, so hopefully more people will start using it for AVR development.

Embedded in general is also not as popular compared to OS targets, but if we don't try to help users then it will remain a little used part of fpc.

Exactly !

I had to search a lot in the forum, wiki and in the fpc-devel, fpc-pascal mailing lists to find some informations regarding embedded targets.

Let's hope that the forum moderator's agree with this suggection and create an embedded section.

I suspect that some of the ARM embedded users may use ultibo (https://ultibo.org/) which has a separate forum.

Thanks for the ultibo link. Hadn't seen that before.
After 3 hours of looking at the docs... 1 shiny new raspberry pi is being shipped to my door.

I would like this as well.

Added.

Added.

Shouldn't there be at least an "Embedded - Other" for those that use .. well, other embedded targets? Probably not enough "critical mass" for new threads, though. :)

That can be posted directly in the "Embedded" board.

You're right, of course. Silly me! :-[

Two forums, both named "Embedded", one for the microcontrollers and one for targets without OS is probably not smart. But the Embedded board being below Operating Systems is why most threads about embedded end up everywhere.

where is the 2nd?

there is "OS" > "Embedded".
This has 2 refined "Embedded" boards.

All of them are for microcontrollers, or other form of hardware that would fall under this name.

Old threads ended, up outside them, because until an hour ago they did not exist at all.

Putting them under OS seemed to be closest match under existing board names.
They are not currently that frequented that they call for a new top level board.

That said, how would you have named/structured them?

The board structure is kind of in line with FPC's nomenclature.  All targets are classified according to processor type + OS which makes embedded a (special kind of) OS.  I guess it isn't much different from grouping black with other colours.

Also, embedded targets do not just include microcontrollers, other CPU targets such as arm and x86-64 are also supported.

I thus do not see a problem with how Martin has structured these new forums.

I think there is a (small) conceptual mismatch in that when writing for embedded targets yor mind is more focused in the hardware than in that there is no OS, so the normal view of "this is for Linux, this for Windows, this for DOS, this for Mac,..." is dimmed. Thus, you don't classify your project first as "OS: None" but as "Processor: ThisOne".

Even though, indeed, the most proper (if not the only) grandpa board of the actual ones is Operating Systems.

Al in all I think Martin did well in putting them where they are.

Leaves the matter of old posts....  I have no intend to spend big time on moving them all (that is to be done on a one by one base)

I also do not know how many there are, or in which boards they currently hide...

Hmmm ... A (quick) search for "embedded target" finds just 131 posts (including this thread) and lots of them have nothing to do with the embedded target.

Is there any way we can help you?

Thanks, it's fine. I didn't know they existed. I already posted a thread.
