Daily snapshot versions? (confused...)
« on: December 22, 2009, 06:14:47 am »
Just wondering -- are the daily snapshots the most up-to-date versions of Lazarus and FPC?

If I want to download the win32 daily snapshot then I have the choice between Lazarus-0.9.29+FPC-2.2.4 and Lazarus-0.9.29+FPC-2.3.1. I suppose "fixes" 0.9.28.3 is the stable version that has been... "fixed". Let's say that I decide to take my chances with the newest version 0.9.29. Then I visit the FPC site where I find out that almost two months ago FPC 2.4.0-rc1 was released. Hm... perhaps 2.3.1 is a bit old and it will be soon replaced by 2.4.x in the Lazarus daily builds? Then I browse the forum and find out that some people have installed FPC 2.5.1. I am guessing that must be the svn version. But I had thought, daily snaphsot = development version = svn version. Otherwise, if there is a FPC 2.4 or 2.5 version, why isn't it already in the daily Lazarus snapshots?

Thanks.

Further, fpc and lazarus have different version numbers.

You could choose, fpc release (2.2.4) and lazarus fixes (0.9.28.3) or go to development version of fpc (2.5.1) and lazarus (0.9.29).

Thanks. But then, why do the Lazarus 0.9.29 daily snapshots come with FPC 2.3.1 instead of 2.5.1?

Time and space.
Lazarus is build with the latest released FPC and with trunk FPC
When there is an upcoming FPC release, then this release is used instead of trunk. Since FPC 2.4.0 is about to be released, that version is used.

0.9.29 snapshots are build with the latest fpc release (fpc 2.2.4 now, fpc 2.4.0 in a month or so). For win32 and win64 there are extra snapshots with fpc fixes branch (2.3.1 now and 2.4.1 in a month or so) and fpc trunk (fpc 2.5.1).

You can find those also at the snapshot ftp server:
ftp://ftp.hu.freepascal.org/pub/lazarus/

Thanks, when I started this thread I was unaware of the availability of Lazarus win32/64 installers for all FPC releases, including 2.5.1, via ftp. I usually visit http://www.hu.freepascal.org/lazarus for daily snapshots.
