The license for community edition last a year?
And then what?
As far as my knowledge goes (I haven't been paying attention at Delphi for years) you need remove and do a clean re-installation (that will then again last a year).
I do not have to remember anything anymore thanks to total-recall.

I prefer Lazarus. More platforms for free. And it includes OPM.

Lazarus would have my preference over Delphi as well lainz but to be honest I haven't touched Delphi for ages so there might be benefits using it... Best thing for OP is to install both and make an (self)informed decision.

I have made the decision to go open and free for all my used software because in the end using proprietary software comes to bite you in the proverbial arse.
I do not have to remember anything anymore thanks to total-recall.

Well about the platforms is true. As I've seen it doesn't support Linux. Only windows, Mac, Android and ios. At least the Community Edition...

Only if a new CE would be released else a regular license renewal.
Major differences between the Delphi editions you can read here.
Linux is for Enterprise and higher.

@all:

I said, that all is an issue of own intuition.
For me: Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit have it pro and cons.
For me: Linux Debian/Ubuntu 64-Bit have it pro and cons.

But for me, the cons for Linux tend to be more complex as Windows.
Because the Device Driver for Linux are "Taylored Software".
This means, that the Development of and Re-Engineer the Windows Drivers so, that the Hardware runs under Linux
is ILLEGAL !
The Industry don't disagree to this - they would sell so many as possible of they Products - but it is ILLEGAL !

I work many Years with Linux, and Windows.
But I am more a Fan of Windows.

I can not say enough: Windows has grown, and I have never been see a BlueScreen since 2016, as I move from Linux to Windows.
Get life, and let life.

Windows was made not for the Internet in 1980'th.
But it has a very friendly UX.

I agree if you say: Linux is the best Hobby OS.
But for business, Windows is better.

All Investment in the modern western World need Money to swap/share it against other Services or Food, and Drinks ...

All alone with Linux, and the Open Source Community - you don't have a Change to life three Weeks.
See: You need clean Watter, not smelling Food, ...

I know, that the youngster Talents tend to be Explore, and Change the System-Settings of the Windows Computer.
But it give ways, to avoid this.
So, you can overwrite the Desktop-Shell with a Console-Like Window without Borders, and Title-Bars, to simulate DOS or Linux Domain's.
So, you as Teacher, you can form a Education Workstation for Beginners till Advance Users.

Microsoft is not the judicative Person for bad Program's, that you can Buy and Install from Magazine CD's or other Storage Media.
Mostly the SHAREWARE / TRIALWARE Authors with their fast and dirty Software makes the Operating System insecure and unstable.

Last but not least the CRACKER Software, which is for ship around License is the Source-Layer to damage the Operating System.
I can tell you some Stories about that - and I know what it means, to CRACK Software...
It is ILLEGAL...

Nowaday's, I never use those Software.
I invest a little payment, to get professional, and good Software.

Software like fpc, and Lazarus are a good start, to learn the Basic's of Programming, to re-invest as counter Part into recruiting and educate new youngsters (in mind, that you honor the Work from other Peoples - like I honor the Work from the FPC Compiler Team, that provide a Deal between Free and Comfort.

You can not claim Comfort from Free Software - which includes 100% stable running with all Components you need, to "free" download the Software from Others, and make Money with the Effort of Others.

That's why the mp3.com Platform shut down in 2000 - because they are ruined - because all Peoples that was thinking, that all Software and Music was free, they could download at all without a fee (to honor the Authors, Writers, ...)

I try to use open source or free software.

Lazpaint, Inkscape, wps office, Inno setup, Lazarus, Firefox, node.js, android studio, notepad ++, vs code,sourcetree...

Usually I don't need to pay for the software except for chatgpt (that my company pays me) and YouTube music (because I don't like Spotify).

I use Windows because most of the customers use Windows and sometimes I do tech support when we need to fix a new bug.

Windows 10 come pre-installed on my machine and I upgraded freely to Windows 11.

But I have several Linux vm to try and debug the Linux builds.

Of course in the company I work we use paid software for hosting, API and support.

So I agree partially with paule32.

Also cracked software is having virus or backdoors always. As well of being illegal.

there is brainwashing and then there is idolatry ... even in software... Wow...

(FPC v3.0.4 and Lazarus 1.8.2) or (FPC v3.2.2 and Lazarus v3.2) on Windows 7 SP1 64bit.

More freedom brings more complexity.

The restriction of Windows forces you to use (even more) 3th party mostly proprietary software.

For commercial entities Windows is better because of the constant burying yourself deeper and deeper in the (commercial) Windows eco-system.

As long as financial gain is the main drive for innovation then there is something amiss. What are you even doing here, using free and open-source software while you can buy yourself into yet another proprietary eco-system ?  :P

But, I detest and digress with these kind of threads turning into "mine is bigger than yours".
I do not have to remember anything anymore thanks to total-recall.

For choosing to use open source instead of paid software?
Or the opposite. For using paid software instead of open source?

Or for using Windows instead of Linux.
Or for using Linux instead of Windows.

I don't ask about piracy because I don't think you support it.

haha. own eco-System ? - I tried to create something like this.
But why should I re-invent the wheel for an Operating System, that was driven only by and/or by myself ?

haha: mine is bigger that yours" - no Answer...

I would like to say: Each one can use the Operating System which does fit into the own mood...
I can not say to someone, that he/she have strickly use this System, and never use the other System.

You can see from my Post's, that I could collect expierences from both Systems.
And my free of choiche is Windows, now.

But, I don't really like Linux - because the Taylored Software.
But, I don't really like Windows - because the strict License.

You can see: nothing is perfect !

Is all about free and paid.
If you want to make money with Delphi you need to pay it.
If you want to make money with Lazarus you don't need to pay it.

Though I assume that Delphi, having its roots at MS-dos/Windows, has better support for the Windows platform. Again, I do not know this for a fact, not used Delphi for ages.
