Hello, and Thank you to Thaddy, dbannon, dseligo, and Josh for taking the time to read my question and give me the benefit of your knowledge in an answer.  Also please excuse my type with a word in the title, I meant to type “permanently” but somehow it got past me when I mistyped it.
Finally, thank you for recommending a version control system.  I have been looking for one for several years.  When I worked in the aerospace industry we called such a system a “configuration management system” and that was the label I was using, unfortunately that label did not map into today’s reality.
